Great mic!

Got this for my husband who often records music at home and after a few weeks of use, he says he is very happy with this mic. It has great clarity and response. He wasn’t sure if he’d stick to podcasting-type stuff with this or utilize it on musical vocals but it turns out that he really likes it for both purposes!

Very impressed with this mic

I have to say that I’m pretty pleased and impressed with this microphone. In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting it to sound this good. It has that really nice rich mid range which I like in mics. I could compare it to other mics that I have, but I won’t mention names, but I’m sure you can figure it out. Now of course this mic is designed for pod cast. I tried it out for singing vocals with mixed results. So let’s just keep it for what it was intended for, pod casting. And for that I think this is a great mic to start out with. And I don’t mean to mean this mic isn’t at pro level, I have a couple of pod cast boards that came with their own mic and this Boya hands down, blows them away. So let’s put it this way, if this mic is your first mic to start pod casting, then you made a very good choice. Construction wise, this bad boy is solidly build, nothing cheap about it’s design at all. It has a nice thick windscreen on it and a good solid mounting bracket. I am very pleased with this mic and glad I took a chance on it. Thank you.

Worthy budget version of the “premium” podcast microphone

Okay, let’s get the obvious out of the way - this is clearly a knock-off (or “tribute”) to the very, very popular fancy brand podcasting microphone that everyone seems to use. The real question is - does this one hold up to the brand name version?Right off the bat, this microphone is nicely packaged with plenty of padding. Upon removing the microphone, you immediately notice the “heft” of the microphone and its frame. Both the packaging and the feel of the microphone are definitely “premium”.The real test, though, is the sound quality. Run through a cheap USB audio interface into Audacity, the recordings I made sounded absolutely perfect. I did need to give it a little bit more gain than the previous microphone I was using, but once adjusted everything was perfect. It isolated the voice well and I didn’t notice any noise in the recordings. So, should you buy this BOYA microphone or the “fancy brand” for recording your new podcast? At 1/3 the price, I cannot see how any comparable microphone could provide triple the performance of this one. From a performance to value perspective, this is definitely, absolutely the one to get.

Punches above its weight class, great mic!

Build quality is solid. Sounds as good as an sm7b. Price is great. I'm a fan of the pill shape. Plosives rejection is great. Side and rear rejection is great. Only downside is it needs a bit of gain but it sounds great with a pre-amp. Very happy with this mic. Nice job Boya!

Impressive Performance

These large format types of microphones are very popular and you see them everywhere. I have been around microphones for decades in the studio and in live performance and at this price point, you would be hard pressed to find a better performing microphone than this one. It works well with speech, vocals and with instruments and provides a good solid overall performance. The other plus is that this microphone doesn’t require phantom power so using it in a live performance or on location is as simple as plugging it in. This microphone is very directional and you want to be sure that you are utilizing the top of the microphone and you are not approach it from the side. The mount is strong and secure and the u-shape allows the microphone to be attached from the top or bottom depending on what type of boom/stand that you are using. This microphone needs to say in a fixed position and you should avoid handling it directly because it will pick up handling noise. I like the windscreen because at times with my style of singing I like to be right up and on the microphone. Believe me I have had to give up a lot of great takes due to the lack of a windscreen or pop filter so I just leave it in place. I am very impressed with this microphone’s quality and performance. Its ‘s been a great addition in my studio.

A great budget dynamic microphone

Having only ever owned RØDE or Shure microphones before (but I have used cheaper brands from time to time when not using my own equipment, and I have also tested a couple of unknown brands too), I was keen to see what this Boya BY-DM500 Dynamic Microphone would be like to use. I do podcasting as part of my work, but I am also a hobbyist musician, and I have a basic recording studio set up at home.On arrival, the BY-DM500 comes in a nicely presented box and has plenty of protective foam to keep the mic safe when not in use. On taking it out, you just get the microphone and a basic instructions leaflet. There are no XLR leads or mounting tripods or boom arms, so you will need to take that into consideration when making the purchase. When taking it out of the box, you instantly get a feel of the quality, this is no lightweight plasticky microphone, it is predominately metal including the yoke mount, which is really solid and holds the microphone in the exact position you want it to be in.My XLR cable (purchased separately) fitted perfectly, and once set up, I was able to start using it straight away. I have used this BY-DM500 twice now, with a total of 160 minutes of unedited recording time. I have used it in my M-Audio M-Track Solo pre-amp and my MacBook Pro.I have a couple of minor criticisms that I will get out of the way first. One is that the foam windscreen could be a little bit better; whilst it does help keep the microphone clean, it did still let through the occasional plosive, but I am being really fussy with that point. As most windshields come in a standard size, you should be able to replace this one, and still get a decent mic setup at a reasonable cost. The second minor issue is that I found is that it can pick up on unwanted mouth sounds if you are a) not used to podcasting or b) (like me) you sometimes forget how close to the mic you are. However, it is easy to clean the audio if you have decent software. The thing that I love about this BY-DM500 is that the depth of sound is amazing for such a budget mic. It does give a good studio-quality sound to my voice, and I found it didn't pick up any background noise which is always an added bonus for home use where soundproofing may not be best. This really is a great microphone, and given that the current price is £75.00 (at the time of review), I can wholeheartedly recommend this to you.

Great alternative to SHURE MV7

Got this to replace my USB microphones to use with my audio interface. It is well-packaged and comes with an XLR microphone and mount. Doesn't come with an XLR cable, which is fine because I prefer to use the ones of my preference. I am also using a microphone arm to mount this onto my workstation, and it is holding pretty well, despite how heavy-duty the microphone is. It weighs. This is an ideal microphone for anyone looking to do podcasts, voiceovers, interviews, etc., without having to break the bank. I would say build quality and actual sound quality emulates similar to a SHURE MV7. Overall, at the time of this review, there is a nice coupon offer, making this in a solid price range for a solid microphone.

Great for recording or broadcast/podcast

I ordered this mic so that I would have an extra 7B style mic for a podcasting class I teach. It sounds very similar to the mic it’s designed to emulate. The feel is a little cheaper, but it’s less than half the price. The only complaint I have is that quality of the foam seems low and it’s probably not going to last if it’s not handled correctly. If you’re using this in a fixed environment I see no issues. The stand mount works great as well. The other unexpected plus is the nice foam rubber box insert. Usually with cheaper mics I have to buy a case and foam insert. This one is perfect as it is.

Big, heavy, and sounds great

Finally... someone has finally made a mic that I like listening to my own voice through.I have always hated the sound of my recorded voice, or even hearing myself through a PA. I have been writing, playing, recording, and performing music for over two decades. Even if I was the closest to the mic I would call the vocalist over to check one, check, check two, the mics before a show. I didn't want to hear myself. This mic has changed that. Maybe it is my voice changing as I get older, but let's just say it is the mic. It offers a nice full range and doesn't make my voice sound nasaly. For speech and for singing it picks up everything you want and nothing you don't. The specs are posted here, so I don't need to go over them again. Suffice it to say that this mic does a great job picking up sound. It also leaves the background out, or keeps it to a minimum. The size of the microphone... well it is huge. I placed it next to a couple Sure mics, PGA58 and a PGA57.I plugged them all into the board and powered the PA. I flatlined the EQ and set the levels all the same. The two Sure mics sounded like they always do. They are great mics, and I know the 57 is more of an instrument mic, but I wanted to get a comparison. My voice through the Boya was more a little more full and had a slightly more low end. I liked the sound of my voice a little more than I normally do.The fit and finish is top notch. There are no blemishes on the housing or bracket. The foam cover is thick and does a great job keeping the "wind" out. Attaching the XLR cable was nice. It was a good fit without any wobble. This is a quality build. This is a quality microphone.-especially for the price.

Impeccable sound quality

This broadcast quality microphone is incredibly well made and makes great sound quality recordings. The audio is crystal clear and crisp. It picks up voices and instruments incredibly well. I have been using it to record a podcast but it could be used in many situations. It is well made and easy to use. This microphone is durable and will last you a long time too.

Microphone

Lovely premium build level solid weight microphone with excellent sound quality. I picked it for my husband to use with recording things for his band. He says it's easy to use and is happy with it's functionality. It looks sleek and stylish too. It doesn't come with any cables but does come on a threaded frame so we can attach it to our own equipment. Overall pleased.

Great bang for the buck

I have had several mics. These are perfect. Great sound options and works well with my system. I have more expensive mics but if needed more I would buy these. I have two and love the sound for podcasts.

Decent price for a very nice sounding microphone

I've recently used this microphone while guesting on a podcast (as well doing a little bit of voiceover for a friend's YouTube channel). It's taken me a while to adjust to a new microphone sound, as I was using a Shure SM58 before. While the SM58 was a very versatile microphone, I think I like this one better for recording talking.I have mine plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett Solo, and the gain can be a little low with this mic. I've got mine running through a Maono microphone preamp... and it is plenty loud.I think it's a great microphone.

Great for Podcasting

I use this for podcasting. I haven't yet used it for vocals in music yet but will try and see how it handles it.

High quality

Solid materials and construction mean this has a nice even pickup with no real noise or clarity issues. I'm no pro, but have used this for recording music (semi) professionally and though this is not a cheap item it performs great. I would highly recommend this if on a budget.
