This is my first gun mic, but it surprised me.
Firstly, the housing is not plastic, it is aluminum. The aluminum casing is highly shielded, effectively blocking electromagnetic interference and making the recorded sound much cleaner.
In addition, it has a low-cut filter function, which cuts out the bottom noise and is indicated by an indicator.
Importantly, the microphone has 2 types of power supply. One is powered by the connected device and the other is by battery. I was surprised by the battery power, as it is a good choice for shooting long hours of outdoor videos.
There are probably some features that I haven't discovered yet, as I just got this mic. I like the microphone so far.

I moonlight as a videographer on the side and I generally stick to "prosumer" friendly brands like rode and audio technica for audio, leaving stuff like the Neumanns to the full time pros... Thus this microphone is targeted toward folks like me, and I really like it! It fits, both in quality and price, in the area between the movo vxr10/rode video micro and an actively amplified mic like the videomic pro. I hooked my BOYA mic up to a Zoom F2-bt field recorder and used it as a backup source, and when I went back to edit, the output was very clean even after boosting a couple of dB. I really like the fact that I don't have to remember to turn off/on a battery so this makes for a very safe backup.

The shock mount for this is a bit lacking for field use. It's adequate if you're stationary or using in a relatively slow moving environment, but with a bit of movement or bouncing, the microphone just slides out of the elastic bands. The mount overall is just cheap and doesn't tighten with much confidence.

I like that it accepts phantom power or a AA battery, which allows it to be used with non-XLR (non-phantom powered) sources. The product page current indicates a XLR to 3.5 cable is included, mine did not get sent with this, though at the time of order I don't think that was advertised.

It has a rated impedance of 200 ohms.

Overall, the value is good, and is especially a good idea to mess around with if you're been hesitating on buying a much more expensive name brand shotgun microphone (like from Sennheiser).

My use case for this is to take advantage of the Super Cardioid condenser and run this on a loud-speaker setup with noise cancellation. It should be more polarized than my existing cardioid from Zoom, which does the job quite well, but I'm not set up for balanced XLR microphones, and I'm having issues with it as is. I have a MOTU M4 4x4 USB-C Audio Interface on order to do further sound testing, and I hope it will resolve the issues I'm having. I will update this review with the results.

For $99 is think this is an excellent mic. There are a ton of cheap mics on the market and in my opinion, to get one with actual good quality sound, this is about the price point you need to hit. Everything you need is included with this including a foam wind screen, dead cat wind screen and a mic mount. The mic mount is very cheap plastic but at least it is on bands and helps with the sound isolation. The include a nice fo-leather case for everything. The noise levels are about what I expected for a mic at this price. Plus post noise reduction works so well today that having crazy low self noise isn't quite the concern it once was. The sound quality isn't what I would called warm. It's just a good basic sound profile that is flat enough to let you mess around with the audio a good amount in post.

So if $100 is the max you have to spend, I think this mic is a good choice.

Has been a great upgrade for podcast video. Picks up very well, be careful with surrounding noise, will pick up!

This Boya Shotgun mic is great because it can be powered by a single AA battery if no phantom power is available. The sound coming from it meets my expectations and then some. I have it connected to a Hollyland wireless mic system and just works. Just wish the storage bag was big enough to hold the shock mount too.

pleasantly surprised. I had a feeling i might be buying insta return worthy trash but honestly it has done the best for me compared to other mics i have tried for my setup. I have a noisy room in which i want to reduce sound except from what its pointing at, me . This does the trick for me. Im no sound expert , just tested different mics on discord etc with friends.

Anyway if you need it for a use case similar to mine, its good.

I read several reviews discussing the battery and phantom power. If you are using phantom power, you MUST have a battery in the mic, but it is only a conductor at that point. A dead battery works fine. The same is true for many of the shotgun mics including the AT. I always pull the battery and store it in the case to avoid corrosion. But this is common in stand alone condenser mics like shotguns.

testing this out i immediately noticed that this mic is extremely sensitive to absolutely everything. it has a little bit of a wider pickup zone than i would normally like, as it picks up a fair amount of background noise if you're in particularly noisy environments, but it was more than adequate enough, especially for the price, for me to recommend this as a beginner option.
