I wanted to try this USB-C mini microphone on my Android phone (Google Pixel 5) with a well-known bird sound ID app called Merlin. My phone's built-in microphone works fine with this audio recording app, but the audio level was on the soft side. This microphone is definitely more sensitive than the built-in mic, resulting in louder recordings.Initially, I thought I would just rotate the screen 180 degrees to use the phone upside down, so that the USB-C port (and the microphone) would be at the top as I use the bird sound ID app. That's when I discovered that Android actually does not allow upside down screen orientation - at least on my phone (Google Pixel 5 with Android 13). I tried using a short USB-C extension cable, but it was just too fiddly in practice. In the end, the solution was to get around the restriction by installing a screen rotation control app from Google Play store.(FYI, apparently an upside-down screen orientation may or may not be available depending on the phone model and OS version / launcher app. Thankfully, multiple free apps are available in Google Play app store that let you overcome this obstacle. This was great, because the microphone attached at the bottom of the phone was just not practical. Not sure if a similar issue exists on the iPhone.)Another issue I encountered was that the included windscreen wasn't very effective against wind noise. So I replaced the provided sponge windshield with a cheap fur muff from Amazon.com. I also added a magnetic USB-C adapter that I already had, and that made connection/disconnection of the mini mic very quick and convenient out in the field.I have not quite decided if the higher sensitivity of this BOYA mic over the built-in microphone was worth all these efforts. The audio is definitely louder using this BOYA USB-C mini microphone, but the mic is omni-directional. So it picks up sounds from all directions equally, not just from the direction the mic is pointed toward. For my particular purpose, I wish the mic was strongly directional like "shotgun" microphones.Anyway, overall this Boya mini mic seems to work well, now that I sorted out my setup issues. I am deducting one star, because I feel like a fur wind muff /windshield could have been included, especially for the price. So overall I would like to give it 4 stars.= = =UPDATE: I tested the audio quality of this microphone by making field recordings of a singing Song Sparrow at a local park. See the second uploaded image for my findings. In short, the BOYA mic is a huge improvement over the built-in mic of Google Pixel 5. (At least ~10dB more sensitive than the Pixel 5's low quality microphone.)Given the positive test results from the field recording test, I am upgrading my rating from 4 stars to 5 stars. (I still would like to see a fur muff included with the product, though.)
