BOYA BY-V4: A Practical Multi-Person Interview Setup

BOYA BY-V4: A Practical Multi-Person Interview Setup

A multi-person interview creates more than one audio problem. Each person needs to be audible, the receiver must match the recording device, and the crew needs to know how the voices will be delivered to the final file. BOYA BY-V4 is listed as a four-channel wireless microphone series. Choose the exact kit for your device and verify the output behavior before the interview.

Plan the Interview Before Connecting Anything

  • Count the people who will speak, including the host.
  • Choose the phone, camera or computer that will make the recording.
  • Confirm the receiver version and supplied connection cable.
  • Check whether the final recording contains mixed audio or separate channels in that configuration. Do not assume four microphones always produce four separate editable tracks.
  • Agree who will monitor the audio and stop the interview if a speaker becomes inaudible.

Assign and Test One Microphone at a Time

  1. Label transmitters and match each one to a speaker on your production notes.
  2. Connect the selected receiver according to the kit’s instructions.
  3. Have only speaker one talk while the others remain quiet. Confirm that the expected input responds.
  4. Repeat for the remaining speakers, checking normal and louder speech.
  5. Record a short discussion with turn-taking and a brief overlap, then listen to the saved file.
  6. Confirm the file format and channel layout in your editing software before recording the full interview.

Make Placement Consistent

Place each microphone so the mouth-to-mic relationship stays reasonably consistent as the speaker turns. Keep it clear of necklaces, jacket edges and hair. Ask everyone to make the movements they expect during the conversation, then check for rubbing or sudden level changes.

For outdoor interviews, fit the wind protection intended for the selected microphones and test in the actual wind direction. A quiet room test does not validate an outdoor setup.

What to Do When Speakers Talk Over Each Other

Set expectations for turn-taking, especially when names, figures or conclusions matter. More microphones do not prevent people from interrupting. If you need independent edits, confirm the recorded channel structure rather than relying on the product’s channel count alone.

Listen for one loud person masking a quieter voice. Adjust the supported input controls and seating arrangement, then repeat the mixed conversation test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does four-channel mean four separate files?

Not necessarily. The output and file layout depend on the receiver, recording device and application. Test the saved file.

Can I use the same receiver with any phone or camera?

Check the selected receiver and connection requirements. Do not assume every version supports every device.

Can noise reduction replace proper microphone placement?

No. Start with placement, wind protection and appropriate levels, then compare processing settings.
